Symposia Series 2008-2009

Dr. Eugene Borza

That Old Ruin, the Parthenon

Did you know that the Parthenon existed as a church longer than as Athena's temple? Join us as Professor Borza traces the building's post-Classical history as a church and a mosque, and recounts its destruction by Venetian cannon-fire in 1687. He continues the story of the building as a ruin, as well as both the early attempts at repair and the present ongoing restoration. His lecture not only relates the technical processes that intend to halt and repair the deterioration of the building, but it also considers the historical and cultural context of a restored Parthenon as a symbol of the resurrected Greek nation.

The lecture will be held at the Parthenon, with a reception following.

The lecture is free but reservations are required. Co-sponsored by the AIA and The Conservancy for the Parthenon and Centennial Park.
