Greening Your Next Event by Reducing Waste & Recycling

The next time you plan an event (either big or small) think about going green! There are many ways to go green at your event but reducing your waste and recycling can be one of the easiest. Follow the steps below or download the Green Event Planning Outline.

Event Planning Steps
  1. What type of event & event goal: It is important to establish what the “green” goal of your event. Do you want to recycle as much as possible or do you want to produce as little waste as possible? Will this be a formal event, casual, in-doors, out-doors, etc. Determining the type of event and what your green goal will be is important before you consider the next step.
  2. Location/logistics: Depending on where your venue will be you may find that certain recycling options are already available. Before you plan your event, contact the venue to see if they offer any recycling or other waste reduction services.
Also, in your location/logistics step, you need to consider proximity to a recycler (if the venue does not provide service), what materials can be recycled locally (even if something says “Recyclable” on the packaging, it may not be recyclable in your area).
  3. Waste characterization: The fun part is now thinking about every possible waste that will be created. From information sheets and registration forms to cookies and left over coffee! What will you have that will end up in the trash? This is where you can consider if you really need name tags or an agenda. Can you use washable, reusable plates instead of throw-away Styrofoam ones? Or, do you need plates at all? You might find creative ways to reduce waste that you never thought of before.
  4. Collection methodology: The next step is picking it all up! How many containers do you need? Where will they be located and where are the high traffic areas where people will need a place to recycle? What are the best containers?
This section will also address how the material you collect will get from your event to a recycler or processor. You have many options from utilizing volunteers to hiring a private company to handle all your needs. Metro Public Works can also assist by lending you event recycling containers or by loaning our recycling trailer.
  5. Analysis: At the end of the day, when it is all over, take time to analyze how it went and what you could do differently next time. If you received the weight of your trash and recycling, calculate your event recycling rate: Recycling / Recycling + Trash x 100 = Recycling Rate.

Finally, let us know how it went and pass on suggestions for others.
