MULTIPLE ORGANIZATIONS ENDORSE MAYOR'S CLEAN WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM
Business, development and environmental organizations endorse proposal
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 27, 2009) -
Mayor Karl Dean announced today that multiple organizations representing the business community and environmental advocates have endorsed the proposed Clean Water Infrastructure Program.
The program would fund a five-year capital improvement plan for Nashville’s water and sewer system and provide funding for stormwater infrastructure projects. Legislation for the program passed first reading by the Metro Council earlier this month, and will be taken up on second reading at a special meeting called by Dean on March 3 at 4:30 p.m.
“The broad support we’ve received for the Clean Water Infrastructure Program speaks to the program’s equity. Through this program, all who contribute to the demands on our water, sewer and stormwater systems will pay for maintaining them,” Dean said.
“While this is not an ideal time to ask our citizens to pay more for anything, our business and environmental communities recognize this is a necessary measure to ensure our city’s continued economic growth and environmental sustainability.”
Endorsing organizations include:
- Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce
- Greater Nashville Hotel & Lodging Association
- World Wildlife Fund’s Southeast Rivers and Streams Program
- Harpeth River Watershed Association
- Associated General Contractors, Middle Tennessee Branch
- Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors
