DEADLINE FOR 2008 PROPERTY TAX FREEZE APPLICATIONS ON MONDAY

Program available to qualifying homeowners age 65 and older

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 2, 2009) -

The last day to file an application for Metro’s property tax freeze program for 2008 is Monday, April 6. Mayor Karl Dean and Metropolitan Trustee Charlie Cardwell are encouraging all Davidson County homeowners 65 years of age and older to inquire about their eligibility.

Homeowners qualifying for the program will have the property taxes on their principal residence (the home in which they reside) frozen at the amount of taxes owed in the year they first qualify for the program. Thereafter, as long as the owner continues to qualify for the program, the amount of base property taxes owed for that property will not increase, even if there is a property tax rate increase.

“This is a great program for seniors 65 years of age or older. This program ensures the taxpayer that their taxes will be frozen at the base year 2008 in the event there is a tax rate increase in the future,” Cardwell said.

Dean said: “This program was designed to protect our citizens who have contributed to our tax base for many years from property tax increases at a point in their life when they are living on a fixed income. Even if the property tax rate is not readjusted this year, it is important for all eligible citizens to apply for this program to ensure they are not unduly burdened should a rate increase take place at any point.”

The tax freeze program was approved by Tennessee voters in November 2006. The Tax Freeze Act of 2007 permits local governments to implement the program, and Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County became the first jurisdiction in the state to establish a tax freeze program.

Interested homeowners should contact the Trustee’s Office at 862-6330 for information on the program and to schedule an appointment to file an application. More information is also available online at www.nashville.gov/trustee.
